Getting around Korea is actually very easy — but only if you have the right card.
That card is the T-money card (티머니 카드).
Once you have it, you won’t need to think about tickets again.

💳 What is a T-money Card?
The T-money card is a rechargeable transportation card used across Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area.
With just one card, you can use:
- Subway (지하철)
- City buses (시내버스)
- Local buses (마을버스)
- Intercity buses (광역버스)
- Taxis (택시)
👉 In short, it covers almost all public transportation in Korea.
🚇 Why You Need It
If you plan to travel around Seoul, this card is essential.
Without it, you would need to buy a single-use ticket every time — which is inconvenient and time-consuming.
👉 Also, most buses in Korea no longer accept cash.
That means you’ll need either:
- A T-money card
- Or a compatible credit card
🔄 Transfer System (Very Important)
One of the biggest advantages of using a T-money card is the transfer system.
👉 You can transfer between subway and buses
👉 Up to 4 times within a limited time
👉 The additional fare is very small, depending on distance.
This allows you to travel across Seoul and even into nearby cities without paying full fare each time.
⚠️ Important Rules Most Travelers Miss
This is where many first-time visitors make mistakes.
✔ You MUST tap when getting off the bus
👉 If you don’t tap out, your transfer will NOT be recognized
👉 You may also be charged extra
✔ Transfer only works between different routes
- Bus → different bus ✔
- Bus → subway ✔
- Subway → bus ✔
👉 But:
- Same bus line again ❌
- Same subway line after exiting ❌
👉 You must switch to a different route or line
✔ Time limit for transfer
👉 Transfers usually need to happen within about 30 minutes.
👉 During rush hours (around 7–9 AM and 6–8 PM), this time can extend to about 1 hour.
👉 Always tap your card when getting off to activate the transfer window.
🌍 Works Beyond Seoul
The T-money card is not limited to Seoul.
👉 You can use it across the greater Seoul area, including:
- Incheon (인천)
- Gyeonggi Province (경기도)
🛒 Where to Buy
You can easily get a T-money card at:
- Airport convenience stores
- Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, etc.)
- Some vending machines at the airport
💰 How to Top Up (충전 방법)
You can add money to your card:
- At subway station machines
- At convenience stores
👉 Most machines support:
- Korean
- English
- Japanese
- Chinese
👉 Important:
Top-up is usually cash only, so make sure you have some Korean won.
The T-money card may look simple, but it’s one of the most important things you can have in Korea.
If you understand how transfers work, you’ll save both time and money.
Travel Korea, made simple.
Your first friend in Korea.
